RC Planes
RC Planes are another hobby which can get very expensive very quickly, but it’s also one that you can have a heap of fun with. These planes are either electric or petrol powered, but you can actually purchase spring loaded gliders which don’t have a motor at all. These planes take a lot of skill to fly, so it’s always a good idea to practice on a simulator first. They are not cheap, and damage very easily if you crash land them! You can download a flight simulator off the internet for free, and you can even hook up consoles so that the actions are the same as flying a plane in real life. Once you are comfortable with this, learn how to identify weather that is suitable for flying and then give it a go, in a large, grassy area. If you try to fly RC planes near trees and power poles, chances are that you will end up ruining your plane when it doesn’t respond how you want it to!
If you have a small plane, make sure that the wind isn’t too powerful, because it will struggle and your chance of having a crash is significantly higher. It’s important to take things slow; if you start off doing this hobby, buy a plane which is cheap and made of foam, so that if you actually do damage it you can repair it without too much hassle. Having a good knowledge of mechanics and a desire to fix things is highly recommended for people taking up this hobby, because it’s easy to break something. If you can’t fix it, then you have to pay the big dollars to get it fixed. Unlike full size Motorsports, these are considerably cheaper but will break easily.
You can buy gliders as RC Planes which you set up a runway for. You peg out rubber and then load the plane up like a slingshot. You can then fire it, and it will glide for up to 30 minutes, depending on the wind and the driver! This is not always as fun as flying a plane with a motor, but its good experience and something different all the same. These are controlled by a standard controller, which you can use for normal planes, but of course there is no throttle! There are Remote Control Planes that are over 6 feet long, which is why it’s important to know how to drive a small plane before you go and purchase a big one worth several thousand dollars! This is the same as RC Cars and RC Boats.
