Rock Climbing
Rock Climbing is an adventure sport which can be done both indoors and outdoors, and is extremely good fun in both cases. The indoor version of this sport comprises of a wall which is manmade, with plastic bits that you can grab onto with your hands and feet. Both the indoor and outdoor version of this sport is extremely safety conscious, because falling from a height can result in very serious injury or even death. Indoor Rock Climbing is only usually done up to around the 40 foot mark, but if you fall off from that height you are in serious trouble. To ensure that the sport remains safe, you are required to wear a safety harness, which clips into a piece of climbing rope. Another person operates it from the bottom, and if done correctly, even if you jump off the wall, the harness and rope will support you.
Many people are often wary of the strength of the rope used, but it can actually hold almost 3 tones, which is about the weight of 30 people! Doing this sport indoor is handy because it’s a great way to build up the muscles needed for outdoor climbing. Also, if you get burned very easily, then doing the indoor version may be for you! Of course, indoor climbing is a much smaller scale, and is not usually real rock. Doing it outdoors can be much more fun, but it all depends on what you enjoy doing. I personally prefer doing outdoor climbing, because it’s more challenging, longer climbs and a much better view. Climbing up cliffs is great, because of the view that you get when you get to the top! Indoor Adventures are always a great way to pass time if its bad weather however.
For most novices, this sport is done on climbs which are set up specifically, with big clips bolted into the rocks. For those who are professional, you can make your own clips onto the rocks as you climb up, but this ideally takes a fair amount of skill and time to learn. It means that if you fall, you are relying on the work that you have done below you. Also, the ropes that are used are slightly different to allow for some stretch if you do happen to fall. Usually you put in new clips every 10 foot, meaning you could potentially fall 10 foot before you are stopped. If the rope was tight and had no flexibility in it, then you would get jolted and possibly injured. Along with Rock Climbing, Abseiling and other Climbing Sports are great fun!
